Amethyst is a magnificent purple stone, ranging from the lightest to the deepest, most rich violet color. It is a type of Quartz with a range of purple hues formed by the presence of iron, other trace elements, and irradiation (1 pp. 63, 3 pp. 23), with a hardness of 7 (3 pp. 23). It can be found all over the world, in places such as Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, Africa, Canada, Russia, the USA, and Europe (3 pp. 23).
It gets its name from the Greek word “amethystos” meaning “not intoxicated” (1 pp. 63), and in ancient time was carried to prevent the holder from getting excessively drunk (2 pp. 168). Greek mythology told of a tale in which the goddess Diana transformed a girl named Amethyst into a clear crystal in order to save her from the anger of the god Bacchus. In his remorse for his unjustified fit of anger, Bacchus poured grape juice onto the crystal as an offering, giving Amethyst the royal shade or purple it has today (3 pp. 23).
